Excursion

Keith and I typically plan one or two paid excursions when we travel in an area.  We knew that there would be one thing that we must do while on this trip….  take an off-road vehicle excursion!!

Yes, we have a jeep and we did quite a bit of jeeping while in the area, but taking a tour offers us the chance to go and do something we can’t do on our own.  The tour I booked with Grand Circle Tours would be in a Polaris RZR so we’d experience the sand dunes in another way.  In addition, we always appreciate the learning experience of a guided tour.  The tour guides can offer information about the area and we’ve found that the guides are also just really interesting people to get to know.

Travel is about seeing amazing places, but even more, it’s about the people you meet along the way (or those that you take with you).  Once again we had an amazing day of adventure, learning more about the area from a local and getting to know a new friend.

Grand Circle Tours

We booked the Coral Pink Sand Dunes Tour with Grand Circle Tours.  I texted with Kyle about our tour prior to the day.  Since Keith and I would be the only two in the group, we were able to put together a plan for the day.  Our day would include sand dunes, a slot canyon, a drive around Best Friends Animal Society and more!

We really like the approach with Grand Circle Tours to give you a “backcountry approach to this state park and show you rarely seen viewpoints.”  We did encounter a few people at the slot canyon, but other than that we really didn’t see any other vehicles/people throughout the day.

We also really appreciated that Kyle took us to a few locations that came up in conversation throughout the day.  This felt very personalized and we appreciate that.  The tour stated it would last around 3 hours and it was every bit 3 hours and probably more.

What a blast!

The Rocking V Cafe

Kyle recommended a few local restaurants in Kanab and we decided to give The Rocking V Cafe a try.  We loved that this place was on Center Street, which is the main street through this super cute town.  The Rocking V Cafe has an amazing atmosphere and delicious food!

Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park

Next, we decided to drive to the main entrance of the Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park.  About 90% of the park is designated for off-road vehicles.  At the main entrance, the area for hiking, sandboarding and playing in the sand is accessible.  We didn’t spend much time here since it was getting to be late afternoon.  We did get to see some people playing in the sand and even saw someone who had taken a kayak onto the dunes!  I’m glad we made this stop to see another part of the park.  I’d love to try sandboarding sometime, but I think I’d mainly be eating sand!

Dessert over Dinner

As we headed back towards the motorhome, we weren’t really hungry since we had such a late lunch.  We really hadn’t spent much time in Springdale and I had a list of recommended restaurants to try.  I had noted that Oscar’s Cafe is known for their desserts so we chose to have a dessert over dinner!

Oscar only offers two desserts, but they match us perfectly.  Keith got the Volcano Brownie Sundae and I got Kathy’s Famous Carrot Cake!  Both desserts were equally amazing and quite possibly the largest portion I’ve ever seen.  It was almost comical that we ordered two giant desserts!!  Those seated around us were watching to see if we could eat it all 🤣  We noticed how delicious every single food item looked, unfortunately, we never made it back to try the food.
