Update on Keith 😷 💉

As you read in last week's newsletter, Keith hasn't been feeling well. He was experiencing some painful sores in his mouth and what appeared to be an infected pimple on his chin (or so we thought). He had also been dealing with a slight earache, but it hadn't initially given him too much trouble. However, things took a turn for the worse when Keith started running a 101.5°F (38.6°C) fever. So, we knew it was time to get him to the doctor to find out what was going on.

Lindsey drove Keith to our local Premier Family Medical clinic in Vineyard, UT. Keith met with a doctor who immediately determined what was going on with him... it was Shingles! We were both in shock to hear this since it was completely unexpected. The doctor also informed us that Keith had an inner ear infection which was causing his earache. The doctor prescribed an antiviral to address the Shingles and an antibiotic to take care of the ear infection.

The spread of the Shingles virus was crazy! Keith visited the doctor in the morning and he only had a few, small visible red patches on his chin and one near his eye. By that evening, the red patches had spread up his face and were getting dangerously close to his right eye. The doctor warned us that the virus can spread into the optic nerve which can result in sight issues. This had us both very alarmed. Thankfully, the antiviral pills started to work almost immediately and the virus did not reach Keith's eye. 😅

The antiviral pills worked amazingly well! In about a week, the sores in Keith's mouth and on his face had nearly fully healed. Keith is still experiencing some lingering nerve pain in his mouth which makes it difficult to eat solid foods. So, he has been living on mostly soup, rice, and oatmeal for the past week.

Unfortunately, the antibiotics did not fully address Keith's ear infection. Keith had to see the doctor again this week to get a prescription for a stronger antibiotic. We are hopeful that this second round will take care of the problem. If it doesn't, Keith will need to see an ENT doctor to have a tube surgically installed in his eardrum to drain the excess fluid off his ear. Let's hope that it doesn't come to this...

Deer Creek Trail

Lindsey continues her daily walks to help prepare for the Camino De Santiago, Portuguese Route. Most weekdays, she walks from our house exploring new routes and neighborhoods. Since she works part-time and has a flexible schedule, she aims for a longer walk on Thursday morning and another over the weekend.

This past Thursday she walked the Deer Creek Trail along the Deer Creek Reservoir. This is a great practice trail because of its length and elevation gain. She walked 10 miles (16 kilometers) with 816 feet (249 meters) of elevation gain, which will be typical for a few days on the Camino.

The Deer Creek Trail is used for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Some people use the trailhead and trail to access the lake for fishing and paddle boarding. People also boat on the lake since the Deer Creek Island Resort is just across the lake.

Lindsey was super excited to see a train along the bank of the reservoir. The Heber Valley Railroad passes here. She was able to take a scenic train ride a couple of years ago when her mom and Thea visited us in Utah. It was fun to be on the other side and see the guests enjoying the view along the train ride.
