Mid-week work & treat session ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ’ป ๐Ÿฐ

Sometimes, it's nice to get out of the house and have a change of scenery when you need to get computer work done. So, on Wednesday, we packed up our laptops and headed to Java Junkie in Provo, UT. This local coffee shop was the perfect spot to enjoy some delicious coffee and treats while working on upcoming blog posts and Tour Divide videos.

We each ordered a latte and a treat. Lindsey chose a slice of the homemade carrot cake, and Keith selected the chocolate chip cookie bar. Both desserts were delicious, but the carrot cake was definitely the better choice.

Keith got cooked during a training ride ๐Ÿฅต ๐Ÿ˜ซ

It's been a couple of weeks since Keith has been on an outdoor ride. So, he was super excited to finally have the opportunity to get out and ride along the gravel roads in Provo Canyon. Unfortunately, this ride didn't quite go to plan...

The ride out to the base of the canyon went well. That all changed shortly after Keith started the very steep road/gravel climb up to the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. Keith immediately began to feel that something wasn't right. He started having difficulty catching his breath, his muscles were aching, and he generally wasn't feeling very well. Keith even had to stop twice to catch his breath; something that he hasn't had to do in over two years! ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ

These issues continued throughout the rest of the ride. This was alarming to Keith because it wasn't immediately clear why he was struggling so much. It wasn't until after Keith returned home and reviewed the data collected during the ride that the issue became apparent. During that steep climb, Keith's power meter recorded air temperatures of well over 100ยฐF (37.8ยฐC), maxing out at 109.4ยฐF (43ยฐC)!!! ๐Ÿฅต That's way hotter than Keith realized. Note that the measured temperatures are combined air and radiated heat from the road surface.

The heat issues continued even after Keith returned home. Once Keith was back in air conditioning, his body started profusely sweating from everywhere. His head, arms, legs, and everything in between were sweating like crazy! Keith immediately drank some ice water and got an ice pack to start cooling his body. Thankfully, after about 20 minutes, his core temperature started returning to normal, and he started feeling much better again.

New Bike Skills Park upgrades ๐Ÿšตโ€โ™‚๏ธ ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐ŸŽ“

During the ride, Keith was able to check out the new upgrades being made to the Orem MTB skills park at the Mount Timpanogos Park near the mouth of Provo Canyon. The upgrades are pretty amazing!

The skills park now has a large jump line, several new beginner and intermediate flow trails, as well as a unique "rock drop" line to practice small drops on. Keith is really excited to have this bike park so easily accessible, as he can now go on training rides and also do some quick MTB skill sessions on the same ride.

Date night dinner at Meraki Greek Grill ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ท ๐Ÿฅ™

For date night this week, we wanted to find something a little lighter/fresh. While scrolling through restaurants on Google Maps, we ran across Meraki Greek Grill in Orem, UT, and it seemed to be exactly what we were looking for.

Meraki is an upscale, counter-serve chain. Think: order at a counter but be served a meal on real dishes with real utensils. Lindsey ordered the Meraki Signature Bowl and Keith ordered the Traditional Gyro Platter. Both of our meals were amazing! The food was fresh, delicious, and more than enough to fill us up. We actually had enough left over for another full meal the next day.

Snowbird Big Mountain Trail and wildflowers ๐Ÿšตโ€โ™‚๏ธ ๐ŸŒผ

On Sunday, one day after Keith's extremely hot training ride, Keith met up with Brandon to ride the Snowbird Big Mountain Trail. Keith was very nervous that his body may not have fully recovered from overheating the day before. Thankfully, this turned out not to be the case, and Keith was able to have an enjoyable day riding with Brandon.

The climb up the Alta side of the mountain was truly magical! This weekend just happened to be the Wasatch Wildflower Festival, so there were beautiful fields of wildflowers throughout the ride. We also saw our friends Kelly and Lin (from afar) as they were hiking along the wildflower trail.

Unfortunately, Brandon had some trouble with his tubeless tire setup on both the climb and descent. Both his front and rear tires started leaking air around the tire bead, and we were having trouble getting the sealant to seal the leaks. Thankfully, we were able to get his tires patched well enough, and he was able to enjoy the amazing Big Mountain Trail singletrack descent.

Upon reaching the bottom of the trail, Keith and Brandon split up. Brandon continued descending Little Cottonwood Canyon trails until he reached his car at the mouth of the canyon. Keith pedaled back up to his Jeep so that he could drive back home.
