Keith's road climb up American Fork Canyon ๐Ÿšด โ›ฐ๏ธ

Keith has officially begun training for the upcoming Wasatch All-Road gravel race. This race will have a lot of steep, mountain climbing throughout the route. To prepare for this, Keith challenged himself to ride the full American Fork Canyon road climb, at a high effort, to see what his maximum sustained output could be.

Keith pedaled from our home in Orem, UT to the mouth of American Fork Canyon. He used this time to fully warm up his legs and his lungs for the grueling climb that awaited him. Upon arriving, Keith immediately began the ascent to the summit. He paced himself well through the lower section of the climb, where the average grade is lower.

As Keith continued the climb, the average grade began to ramp up. ๐Ÿ˜… Keith proceeded to slowly increase his power to match the increase in grade, attempting to hold a relatively consistent average speed. During this ride, he also focused heavily on proper forward body position to ensure that he was being aerodynamic and using his larger glute and hamstring muscles, rather than the weaker quadriceps.

Eventually, Keith reached the summit. He was elated that he had actually accomplished his goal of riding to the top at power, without stopping! ๐ŸŽ‰ All in all, Keith covered 58.4 miles (94 kilometers) and 3,947 feet (1,203 meters) of climbing in just over 4 hours and 15 minutes of moving time.

Date night dinner at Tacos Los Gomez ๐ŸŒฎ ๐Ÿฅฉ

For date night this week, we visited Tacos Los Gomez in Orem, UT. This local taco shop is located in the Plaza Las Americas shopping center. Lindsey ordered the Carne Asada Plato and Keith ordered the 2 Quesabirrias and 2 Birria Tacos combo meal.

Lindsey's steak meal was huge! It had a combination of thinly sliced beef ribs and steak, along with the usual accompaniments. Keith's birria combo was delicious. Keith especially enjoyed the salty side of consume for dipping the tacos.

After our meal, Keith wanted a small sweet treat, so we walked over to one of the other vendors in the shopping center that was selling homemade ice cream. Keith ordered a small cup of a combination of pineapple and coconut. The flavors were incredible, and it really seemed that the ice cream was actually homemade, using real ingredients.

Keith's big training ride to Corner Canyon ๐Ÿšด ๐Ÿฅต

On Saturday, Keith headed out on a long and hot gravel race training ride. Keith rode out to Corner Canyon in Draper, UT, from our home in Orem, UT. This in itself is a big ride! However, that was just the beginning of Keith's day...

Keith then proceeded to climb the Corner Canyon singletrack trails and forest service roads until he reached the top of the Jacob's Ladder downhill trail. Keith descended Jacob's Ladder, which is quite the experience on his fast-rolling gravel tires, and then descended the Rush trail until he reached the bottom of the trail system once again.

Keith then pedaled back up to the top of the Rush trail. At this point, Keith had originally planned to continue riding singletrack over to the Maple Hollow South downhill trails. However, the Utah heat was really starting to crank up! ๐Ÿฅต Keith knew that he would have a headwind all the way home, so he instead descended the road back down towards the Murdock Canal Trail.

This turned out to be a smart move as temperatures quickly soared to 100ยฐF (37.8ยฐC). Keith pushed the pace to get home and managed not to crack under the heat. All in all, Keith rode 77.8 miles (125.2 kilometers) and climbed 4,596 feet (1,401 meters) in just over 6 hours of moving time.

Lindsey Gets Out ๐Ÿฅ ๐Ÿ˜ถโ€๐ŸŒซ๏ธ

It's been difficult for Lindsey to do very much outside of the house this week. She has general restrictions due to the blood clot, and the heat we've been experiencing in Utah intensifies the symptoms she's trying to avoid: increased heart rate, swelling, pain, etc. After a short outdoor walk this week didn't go as well as she wanted, she decided to plan some indoor outings.

Treats at TOUS les JOURS โ˜• ๐Ÿฅ

Lindsey's had her eye on TOUS les JOURS for a while now, so this was finally the week! This bakery is known for its French-Asian-inspired treats. Lindsey loves both sweet and savory options, and TOUS les JOURS offers a wide variety of both. It's also a great place for specialty coffee, tea, and other beverages.

The only thing she found lacking was the seating. With three tables and a small window bar table, there's not enough space to be comfortable spending an extended amount of time. She was really hoping this would be a place she could work from in the future. To be fair, it is listed as a bakery, not a coffee shop, so this was expected. She's excited to return and try more bakery items in the near future!

Breakfast at TRUreligion Pancake & Steakhouse with Stephanie ๐Ÿณ ๐Ÿฅž

To wrap up the weekend, Lindsey and Stephanie planned a day out that would include brunch at TRUreligion Pancake & Steakhouse and a visit to Dreamwalk Park.

TRUreligion is always a hit, and Lindsey realized it's been quite a while since she's had one of her favorite brunch meals at TRUreligion. Stephanie was on board right away and combed through the menu, realizing that everything sounded so amazing and that it would be difficult to choose just one. Lindsey's "Eggs Ben's Addiction," featuring a cat's head biscuit as the base, was exactly what Lindsey was craving. Stephanie decided to order a sweet and a savory option, allowing her to try multiple meals at once!

A magical experience at Dreamwalk Park ๐Ÿ„ ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Dreamwalk Park is located in a mall near Keith and Lindsey's house. They've walked by it several times, never really knowing what it was. Looking for an air-conditioned activity, this was the perfect time to check it out. Keith wasn't super interested, and Lindsey knew this would be right up Stephanie's alley.

Dreamwalk is self-described as an interactive themed art experience. It allows for different levels of participation once you enter the "portal." You can enjoy the creativity of each room simply by walking around and looking. You can also search for hidden symbols by using your decoder light to reveal images on the walls. The goal is to count the number of categorized images to win a prize at the end. Or if you're up for a challenge, you can use the light to reveal text written in code and decipher the messages. There are also games and other interactive options throughout the experience.

Lindsey and Stephanie opted to enjoy the rooms while looking for the images hidden on the walls. Decoding the messages seemed like a little too much work ๐Ÿคฃ It was definitely a unique experience and something they really enjoyed. They each quickly became immersed in each room. First scanning the room with their eyes, in awe of the creativity in the design and often wondering, "how did they do that?" Then they'd each search for the hidden images and creatures that could be revealed with their light or by swiping their entry card. It really was something unique to experience and the perfect indoor activity on a very hot day.

MTB downhill practice with Brandon ๐Ÿšต ๐Ÿš€

On Sunday, Keith met up with his friend Brandon to ride a quick MTB lap at Corner Canyon. Brandon was eager to test out a new set of wheels and tires on the local trails. Keith was excited to get to ride these trails on his real mountain bike tires rather than his gravel tires. It's much more fun descending singletrack when you know you have enough grip to hang on. ๐Ÿ˜…

Keith and Brandon met up in the early morning to avoid the afternoon heat. They quickly pedaled up to the top of Jacob's Ladder before starting the associated descent back down. This was a super fun day for Keith since he was still familiar with the trails from riding them the prior day. This familiarity gave Keith a little boost of confidence when tackling some of the rougher/steeper segments.
